Beyond Light explores the world at the Kamla Mehta School for the Visually Impaired in Dadar, Mumbai. This documentation has been an intriguing journey for me to understand how learning occurs without seeing—where students master academic subjects, life skills,
and artistic pursuits through alternative sensory pathways.
As a photographer, I am captivated by their extraordinary ability to understand and navigate a world without light. The project reveals how these talented students construct knowledge and meaning through touch, sound, smell, and spatial memory. Their reality transcends conventional visual understanding—demonstrating how the human mind adapts and flourishes even in the absence of sight.
Through this work, I seek to illuminate the unseen dimensions of perception and learning.
Beyond Light challenges viewers to reconsider the nature of understanding itself, showcasing how these students grasp complex concepts, form rich mental images, and develop connections to their surroundings. All without the sensory experience most take for granted. Their journey represents a powerful testament to human adaptability and the diverse pathways through which we can comprehend our world.
